A hard hitting trend

Expanded metal is used for many things, but they are relatively new in the area of building facades. The latest trend in facades is expanded metal curved around or fastened to buildings to make them more beautiful and interesting.

The holes in the mesh can be in many different sizes and shapes, and the metal itself can be coloured to give numerous effects. As well as aesthetics, using expanded metal also has other advantages: protection from wind, heat, sun glare and control of air flow and light are a few of the many benefits.

Timber: a fire resistant building option?

E-mail Print PDF
According to the ITFB (Institute of Timber Frame Builders) the common perception that timber homes burn more easily than any other structure is a myth. “The fire resistance of the structure should be regarded as a property of the structure itself, rather than whether it is built of timber or any other building material. In many cases, the structural timber is sheathed with fire resistant materials such as gypsum plaster board products internally and fire resistant external claddings which protect the timber framework and more than adequately provide the fire ratings required by the authorities,” says Werner Slabbert of Eco Log Homes and the ITFB.

A cautionary word from an architect in the know

E-mail Print PDF
We recently received a comment from Hans Bergs (SACAP, SAIA, RIBA) from Hentrich Bergs and Associates Architects, about the relationship between the design of the exterior and interior of a building. Bergs cautions against talking about them as if they are two different components of a building. “One derives from the other and a good building is functionally designed from inside out so that the exterior is a reflection of the interior functions. The Sydney opera is a good example of a bad building in that the interior bears no relationship whatsoever to the sculptural shape of the exterior.”

Food for thought indeed.
