Flush toilets vs latrines

E-mail Print PDF

latrine

US researchers have questioned the global view that flush toilets offer ‘better’ sanitation solution than lowly latrines in developing worlds.

They researchers argue that installing flush toilets can promote unsanitary conditions when the effluent is discharged untreated into once clean rivers and streams. A properly built latrine on the other hand keeps sewage safely separate from drinking water.

What do you think is the better sanitation option; flush toilets or latrines?

After speaking to a researcher at the Water Research Council, some of the points
she brought up about latrines made a lot of sense. However, it depends on a lot
of factors, its not about choosing one over the other, there are economic,
environmental, social factors among others to consider.

I have to go with flush toilets. I know it's the more cliche response, but we
have to face the facts. In SA, the chances of us taking care of latrines are
slim. They get damaged more easily than flushed toilets and will easily lead to
disgusting hygiene situations.

Relevant topic though, considering the DA vs
ANC nonsense - both parties thought open toilets cheaper/better than flush, but
society begged to differ.

But if you take better care of the latrines, you shouldnt have problems. but
people use them as a dumping pit, hence the smells and...

True, but with one latrine between so many people, it's going to get pretty
gross pretty quickly.

If we could trust that the latrines would be taken care
of, then there probably wouldn't be a problem at all.

But it is one per household...someone help us here and give us the right
information.

As far as I remember, Carte Blanche said, the other night, that there are a lot
less than one household, but I can't comment, as I don't know for sure?
